Some catching up to do... (20/07/2020)

I apologise, it’s been a long time. A very, very long time. I last posted on the 11/04/2016, that’s over four years ago! Thinking that makes me shudder slightly. In my defense, I’ve not been twiddling my thumbs this whole time. I’ve been involved in lots of brilliant things over the last few years and I can say confidently that I have spent the time well. Lets do a quick (okay not so quick) movie style montage to get you up to speed.


The last post I made was about the Digital Diary (a sort of PDA style device) that I made for my Systems and Control A Level Final Project. That project was a fantastic learning experience for me and I believe the end result was at the top of my capability at the time. However, looking back on the blog post now fills my head with thoughts on what I would do differently and how silly some of the decisions I made were. This, I believe, indicates the level of change and growth that I have experienced over the last four years as a result of my activity. Namely: finishing my Year in Industry, attending University and completing a range of Summer Placements. Ironically, I see that I am only truly starting to appreciate how much has happened now that I am actively looking back on the last four years. Periods of reflection are important, so please indulge me whilst I reminisce for a while and pass on some of the lessons I have learned over these last few years.

The Beginning - A Year in Industry

I posted about the Digital Diary when I was about 5 months into my Year in Industry. I completed my Year in Industry at a company called Analox Sensor Technology (you can find out more about them here: https://www.analoxsensortechnology.com/) in the Research Department, looking at the characterization of sensors and development of new tools to improve the research process. I can safely say that my first day was one of the most nervous days I’ve ever had (more will come before my recap is done); I had no experience and very little confidence. However, a number of extremely transformative processes started on that day that have certainly shaped the rest of my life to date.


First of all, I started in a car share. I say “car share”, I was just hitching a lift with some colleagues at Analox! Although I had my license by that point, I didn’t have a car to contribute to the arrangement. The car share was fantastic because it gave me an insight into what life as an engineer was really like. I got to hear about the challenges my colleagues had faced over the years, lessons they had learned and lots of advice they wanted to pass on. Despite the fact I wasn’t actually in the office during the journey, it was extremely valuable time. Thus:


Lesson 1: There is a great deal to be learnt from things that are not directly linked to a job or internship.


Secondly, I had a great mentor in my boss in the Research team. He has a ridiculous amount of patience and was always willing to take me through a problem when I needed the help. This allowed me to learn much more than I would have done otherwise. I was allowed to grapple with problems and given sufficient time to work things out for myself. When I couldn’t, help was there for me. Other members of R&D were also extremely helpful and were always willing to give up their time. As a result, I was able to tap into a wealth of knowledge that I wouldn’t have had access to on my own.


Lesson 2: Learn from and engage with the people around you (especially when you’re on an Internship). Google may have the answers but you will learn much more from asking a colleague.

Finally, I started my first proper engineering job (and really my first job at that point). Working at Analox really cemented my passion for engineering and more specifically, problem solving. I realised that I loved the thrill of the hunt that comes from producing a solution, finding faults and ultimately trying to tackle the worlds problems. I remember sitting at my desk one day, pausing for a minute or so, looking out across the office. I could only think about two things: the amazing things the people in-front of me were working on and the fact that I was being paid for something I would do for free. Over my time at Analox I got to work on automated testing systems, custom graphical interfaces, sensor characterization and many other fantastic projects.


Lesson 3: Experience is invaluable. There is a wealth of very useful knowledge in books and online; but, true understanding really comes from grappling with a problem yourself.


Working at Analox was a brilliant experience for me and I have had many opportunities over the subsequent years that occurred because of my time at the company. During my time there I massively grew in confidence, experience and ability. To all my colleagues and friends at Analox, thank you for all your help and patience! Hopefully at some point I will be able to cover my time at Analox in more detail, but let’s try to keep this post at a reasonable length!


As an aside, I completed a maths course whilst going through my Year in Industry (working in the evenings). This course was with Loughborough University and specifically designed for students on a Year in Industry before University. I would highly recommend courses like this. I was much more prepared for maths at University than I would have been, which allowed me to achieve better results in maths and other modules.

University

The year I spent at Analox whipped by, before I new it I had spun through a summer and was preparing to go to University. In an odd way, I was more nervous about starting University than I was about starting at Analox. It occurs to me now this is because there are many more unknowns associated with University and most of these you have to face in your first year. By unknowns, I specifically mean questions like: Will I be able to make a new group of friends okay? Will I cope okay with the course? What’s it going to be like living in a big city? These sorts of questions rattled around my brain for quite a few weeks before I packed up all of my things and made the journey to Sheffield to start my degree.

After tossing around a few degree choices in my head (all in the engineering sector), I decided on Electrical and Electronic Engineering. For those not so involved in the STEM sector, Electrical and Electronic Engineering covers areas related to the specification, design, manufacture and testing of electrical circuits. This covers a wide range of things, from the next IPhone to the control circuitry for a scanning electron microscope. Every time you send an email, use your microwave or drive your car you are using the work of an Electrical and Electronic Engineer. Needless to say I was excited about starting the course and delving into the complex, vast world that engineers inhabit. Was I worried? Yes absolutely, the content sounded complex and challenging (and I wasn’t that excited about doing maths again either).


My experience now tells me nerves are a good thing in most cases, they usually mean you understand the challenge you are about to face enough to give it proper respect. Realistically, should I have been worried about the course? I’ll leave no misconceptions here, degree’s are difficult. Nobody can breeze through one with little effort and no one should expect to do that. STEM subjects in particular take a lot of effort and dedication (with a fair amount of stress as well). I would only really recommend a degree in Engineering to people who are sure they have an interest. I would certainly suggest trying to give the discipline a go first before committing (University open days and summer courses are very good for this!). I have spent many a late evening writing reports, completing tutorial sheets and reading lecture notes. With this in mind:


Lesson 4: University requires a lot of effort and self motivation. The extra freedom it gives you is fantastic, but with that freedom comes and expectation that you will manage your own time. Not doing this properly can cause a lot more stress and difficulty than there may have needed to be.


The upside to this is that you get way more out of University than you put in. If you are willing to put in the effort and get involved with the University community you will meet some fantastic people and have a brilliant time. To date, here are some of the highlights of my University experience:

  • I’ve been a member of Avalon ROV, a student team working to build an underwater robot to compete in the MATE ROV competition, for two years. This included a trip to UK Maker Faire.
  • I was President of the EEE Society during my second year. During this time I organised a range of events including socials, factory visits and an End of Year Ball.
  • I’ve been a member of the Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy (SELA) for the last two years. This has given me access to top class workshops and teaching in Professional Skills all for free; as well as a group of friends I’ll know for a long long time!
  • I’ve tried Archery and Fencing, as well as being involved in weekly Gaming socials.
  • I’ve been to several live music events, comedy performances and other shows. I’ve also taken trips to other UK cities with friends.
  • I’m a representative for the IForge, the first student led Makerspace in the UK. This gives me access to a range of tools (laser cutters, 3D Printers, milling machines, etc.) 24/7 and means I’m involved in a fantastic community of makers!
  • I’ve built an Infrared Receiver, Switched Mode Power Supply, Amplifier and Lock in Amplifier (as well as a range of other projects) through my course and learnt about loads more. My course also connected me with a very close group of friends that I’ll know well after University has finished.

This is not to say that it’s all gone perfectly. There has been rushed nights of report writing and presentation polishing, periods of stress where code JUST WOULDN’T COMPILE! University is great because it teaches you to be autonomous, think on your feet and carry yourself. It won’t all go perfectly and there will be moments where you wonder whether your doing the right thing. 9 times out of 10 though, those are the moments where you learn the most. As they say, if it’s worth doing it’s not easy. So, based upon all of this, what are the answers to those previous questions?


Will I be able to make a new group of friends okay? => Yes absolutely. One of the great things about University is that there are so many groups of people all following their interests. You will absolutely find like minded people and make friends, some of whom you will know for a long time. Join clubs and societies, try new things. The group of people right for you will come from that.


Will I cope okay with the course? => Yes absolutely, as long as your willing to put the time in. With University, you get out what you put in. If you apply yourself and engage with the content, you’ll do brilliantly. This is not exclusive to University as well! Ask questions, be inquisitive and you will learn way more than just the course content. Universities are a collection of people who are all very passionate about their subject, use that to your advantage and learn from them!


What’s it going to be like living in a big city? => That more comes down to personal preference, but it’s certainly not something to be intimidated by. The brilliant thing about cities is that there are always loads of things to experience and get involved in. You will always be able to find a group of people with similar interests. Ultimately, living in a city cannot be described as boring. However, it can be difficult to find areas of quiet and get away from the busy schedule of every day life. This means it can be harder to find time to rest and recuperate. This is where Sheffield is particularly great as the Peak District is only a short train journey or bus ride away!


Ultimately; my message to prospective first year students would be, don’t worry. You have to remember that everyone is feeling and thinking in the same way as you. Everyone is trying to find new friends, everyone is trying to find their feet. It will be okay. There will be times where things will get busy and difficult, but true progress only comes from challenging yourself. University provides a brilliant platform to do that and gives you a group of people that will join you in that journey.

Summer Placements

Finally, the last point in this triple whammy of reflection, summer placements. I’ll say right from the start, I think summer placements are a fantastic opportunity and something that prospective engineering students should try to take advantage of right from their first year of University (at some point in the future I’ll write a post about my experience with securing Summer placements). As I said previously, there is no substitute for experience. Despite their short duration, summer placements will give you plenty of it.


Over the last three years (again, feels very weird to be typing that) I’ve completed three Summer Placements. One back at Analox in the Production Engineering Team and two at Siemens Congleton in the Digital Enterprise department (I’m actually currently on the second one). At Analox I worked on streamlining production times by improving manufacturing processes, this included exploration of areas suitable for automation and introduction of a new jigging system. At Siemens, I work on developing implementations of new digital technologies (such as IOT) on the production floor. Primarily this involves working with Siemens’ IIoT platform, Mindsphere.

All of the tips for Year in Industry placements I mentioned earlier also apply to Summer placements, except that the timescale is accelerated. This means you have way less time to absorb information and develop meaningful experience. Being inquisitive is what makes the difference here. You won’t have time to do everything and experience everything yourself, so the next best thing is to learn through the experience of others. You will be surrounded by teams of very experienced people who are skilled in their field, absorbing even a fraction of their knowledge will give you a real advantage going forward.


Ask people questions. My experience is that people are always more than happy to answer or help you out. Ask people what they are working on, what problems they are facing and what they plan to do to solve those problems. Where you can, try and offer some of your own experience. People in Engineering companies are always working on interesting things; even if it’s not directly related to what your doing at the time, that knowledge could be very useful later on in your life. Summer placements are a great time to work out what you don’t know. Try to be like a sponge, absorbing all knowledge that comes into your path. Most importantly, remember this:


Lesson 5: Being an intern doesn’t mean you don’t have valuable experience to offer. Summer placements are always a two way street. Companies stand to learn just as much from you as you can from them. If you share your knowledge, you are more likely to receive guidance and help in return.


As an additional note, one thing I have noticed over my years at University is that people tend to focus on applying to larger companies when trying to secure placements. Whilst working for larger companies will give you access to big projects and large teams of people to learn from, don’t discount the value of a smaller company as well. Smaller companies have less resource to complete their tasks and this tends to result in you experiencing a much wider range of processes within a business. Especially early on, this is very valuable.

Rounding Up

So, as you can probably tell, the last four years have been quite the journey. I’ve had the opportunity to visit and work at some amazing engineering sites; I’ve made loads of progress through my University course and extra-curricular activities. Most importantly, I’ve met some fantastic people. Ultimately, I know I can look back and feel proud of what I have achieved over the last four years. So what would my overarching piece of advice be after this time?


Be enthusiastic and inquisitive. Most importantly of all, follow what interests you. If you have a passion for something, you will be naturally drawn to things that will help you improve. Other people can sense your interest as well, if it aligns with theirs they will really want to help you succeed. Ultimately, things come a lot easier if you enjoy what your doing. If you haven’t found what really drives you, keep searching.
